In 1978, Al Sharpton graduated from Brooklyn College with a degree in political science. He then worked as an aide to Congressman Emanuel Celler (D-NY). After a year, he moved to the offices of the National Action Network (NAN) in Washington D.C. In 1987, Sharpton became the spokesman for the family of Tawana Brawly – a black teenager who was abducted and raped by a group of white men. In 1988, a Newsday article reported that Sharpton was an FBI informant for organized crime, public figures, and black civic leaders. However, later on, all charges were acquitted. In 2001, Sharpton was sentenced for 90 days jail for trespassing on US navy property in a protest of military training activities. The following year, he announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination but dropped out after endorsing John Kerry. He then spoke at the funeral of Rosa Parks and delivered a eulogy at Michael Jackson’s funeral. The following year, he delivered a show on MSNBC “PoliticsNation” which premiered that year. In 2014,Sharpton and his companies owe more than $4.5 million in unpaid taxes. That same year he spoke at the funeral of Aretha Franklin in Detroit. The following year he announced organizing a March in Washington to mark the 57th anniversary of a historic demonstration for civil rights which took place in Detroit on March 6th 2021
