Alex Trebek was born on July 22, 1940, in Greater Sudbury, Canada. He is the son of George Alexander Trebek and Lucille Trebek. Alex’s father worked as a chef.
He began his career as a news correspondent for the Ottawa Citizen and then the Montreal Gazette. In 1969, he was named the first Canadian correspondent to report from Moscow during the Cold War. He also served as a foreign correspondent for CBC’s World Service from 1978 to 1984.
